Welcome to the HHH listening clubThis week we'll be listening to -Here's what had to say about this albumDr. Lecter is New York rapper Action Bronson's debut studio album, released in 2011. For me, what makes this album special is that it is just great fun from start to finish.
The formula throughout is simple, just great beats paired with witty lyricism. Some of the lines in this thing are hysterical 'I'm on the third floor, your class was in the basement, you know what that means: you got a hint of retardation'. Perhaps Bronson's most notable feat is his previous workings as a renowned New York chef, and food is a large source of inspiration in his lyrics. It's hard to exactly pin down the sound of Dr. Lecter, the production has an old school vibe, with some jazzy influences and a lot of vintage breakbeat sounding sampling, along with some modern samples, such as in Chuck Person sampling Sin City. The sound of album remains uniform throughout which really brings the album together.I'm not sure exactly why, but for me this album is just so easy to listen to. I wouldn't go into it expecting anything game-changing or some masterpiece.
Instead, without pretending to be groundbreaking or hugely original in it's sound, we are instead treated with 45 minutes of straight up, fun, and frankly at times hilarious New York rap.Selector:Album: Action Bronson - Dr Lecter (2011)Stream/Download:GuidelinesThis is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!WHY do you like this tape?
What are the best tracks? Did it meet your expectations? Have you listened to this tape before? What is your first impression? Explain why you like it or why you don'tRemember people who participate in the discussion in a meaningful way are entered into a draw to select next week's album. This is the tape that got me into Bronson, I remember the video for Shiraz dropping and this album being nowhere on the Internet except for sale on his website.
I absolutely love this tape and it's definitely in my top 10 all time releases. One cool thing about this album is that all Tommy's instrumentals are entirely comprised of samples and breaks from super obscure (a lot of Eastern European) sources. That's not something you see as much now a days (and I feel there is good reason behind that) but here it's done so well.Bronson kills this tape front to back and I think this is arguably the hardest he's ever come on a project. His personality definitely developed more throughout his tapes and he started to take himself a little less seriously, but you can still see a lot of the humour and crazy references he's become so known for here. This is his last project where you see a lot of features from other Outdoorsman affiliates, since then it's usually just Mayhem, and most of the features are dope. It has a really nice homegrown aesthetic where you can tell it's just a bunch of dudes who are tight from NY.
Bag of money is a sick posse cut.Favourite tracks have to be The Madness (potentially the nastiest flow I've ever heard from him), Shiraz, Beautiful Music, Buddy Guy, but this album is honestly incredibly solid front to back. 'This shit is rawer than the Tuna on a plate for eighty dollars.' Lecter is one of my favorite; if not my favorite piece of music that Bronson has put out. His flow is different in almost every song, his lyricism and humor make complete sense, while he still paints an image with his words and metaphors. I really like how he's going hard and trying to prove that he can rap, but it's obvious that he's having a lot of fun as well. The production includes super silky band samples including horned and stringed instruments, blended in with that classic smooth New York rap sound. The snares and back beats remind me of 90's hip-hop, very simple and straight forward which really helps the instruments stand out.
None of the beats on the album seem off, which is a good thing. Sometimes you hear guys rap on a beat that make you go: 'huh?' His references are no surprise to anyone who has listened to Action and his crew rap before. Raunchy sex, drug use, organized crime, crude humor, luxurious & culinary indulgences come together to make great poetry as we all know.My favorites are 'The Madness', 'Jerk Chicken', 'Barry Horowitz', and 'Ronnie Coleman'.
Any feature with Meyhem is a good one. I'll admit that this not the first album of his I came across. Although it was quite refreshing to see that his style has hardly changed through his short but industrious career. It was exactly what I expected from Arian, just good all-around rap that will make you smile or cringe at times. In my opinion he has only improved, and if you haven't listened this is a great place to start. I think this album shows off a side people haven't exactly seen out of him out of him from his latest work.
Great album, that anyone who thinks Bronson is whack should listen to. The guy can spit hard when he wants to. This album does a great job of nailing a particular vibe throughout.
For example the production on Brunch is so smooth to me, really love that track. Shiraz makes you feel like you're walking around Queens, maybe hittin up a Korean BBQ food truck and shooting some hoops with your homies.
I agree with the OP, this album is so easy to throw on shuffle and vibe to right away. The NY and food references give Bronson a lot of character and wit, and also continue creating the vibe I'm talking about. This album really won me over as a big AB fan after I heard Blue Chips. If you're someone who is skeptical of Bronson, or think he's just a gimmick of a fat white rapper- listen to this album, I guarantee it will change your mind.
Action was born and raised in Flushing, Queens. He is of Albanian and Jewish descent. He used to be a respected fire-flame gourmet chef in New York City, but gave up cooking for a career and still frequently raps about food in his songs. He initially gained notoriety lyrically and stylistically resembling to rapper (whom he collaborated with, along with friend, and fellow rapper on a song called 'Meteor Hammer' on 's 2011 album Legendary Weapons). In an interview with HipHopDX, he was asked about how it was to sound like hi.
